Shack dwellers have no faith in councillor
WITH reference to the letter "Move the shack dwellers" (Daily News, August 12), we, the community leaders of all the informal settlements in Reservoir Hills and Clare Estate, are overjoyed to hear that I we are on top of the Housing Department's priority list to be moved to Cornubia when the first batch of houses are ready. Many of us have been 'iv! ing in thi,s area for more than 20 years, under pathetic conditions with no proper sanitation, electricity or water. We arrived with little children. Today they are adults with kids of their own. We do not have much confidence in our ward councillor, Themba Mtshali, to oversee the relocation because we believe it is not in his interest for us to be moved to Cornubia. He will at all costs avoid relocating the suffering community because hel sees us as his I voting fodder and the ticket to winning the next eiection. We appeal to the local ratepayer associations, development fortuns, religious organisations, civic action groups, NG0s, Abahlali baseMjondolo and Sanco to put pressure on the councillor and the Housing Departrnent, and continue to pressurise them until all the informal settlements in ward 23 are relocated as plarmed. We are tired of living in the jhonclools (shacks). Our constitution says everyone has the right to adequate housing. We can now enjoy this basic right.
