UMHLANGA, MOUNT EDGECOMBE

Umhlanga, just North of Durban is the gateway to the KZN North Coast. It is famous for its fabulous beaches and party atmosphere. It is a great family holiday destination and has many attractions such as the Gateway Theatre of Shopping. This mall is quite remarkable, and gives a different kind of shopping experience! It has many boutiques, a large movie theatre and a 22m high climbing wall known as “The Rock”. It also offers the adventures of the mini 4x4 track. For an educational tour you can visit the Natal Sharks Board, this is a really great trip for the children. Here you will learn a lot about the sharks and their environment. You will also learn about the measures that the Sharks Board take to protect us on the shores of KZN.

Umhlanga is a great beach and nature destination. The famous lighthouse still flashes its warning signal every night, its stands tall on a beach that has been awarded Blue Flag status for its cleanliness, environmental standards and facilities. Umhlanga like the rest of the North Coast is very gifted with shops and restaurants and many other attractions for the whole family!

PHOENIX

Phoenix Settlement, located some 20km northwest of Durban, which Mahatma Gandhi set up in the year 1904, was officially established as a township in 1976. The story of how Phoenix got its name goes back to a case of a sugarcane farmer who once had his crop destroyed by a fire and how it was re-established like a Phoenix arising from its ashes.

Considered one of the oldest Indian settlements in South Africa, Phoenix has been home to many of the labourers from the sugar cane plantations for many decades. Today Phoenix is a thriving community with much development taking place with private public partnerships such as the one that saw the development of the Phoenix Community Center.
